W201
1. W201 is a 96-plant synthetic varietyresulting from phenotypic recurrent selection for highforage quality. Parentalgermplasm traces to Dart and Promise. Approximate germplasm, sourcecontributionsare M. falcata (9%), Ladak (19%), M varia (24%), Turkistan (14%), and Flemish(34%).
2. W201 is adapted for use in the north central and east central regionsof the United States.W201 has been yield tested in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
3. Flower color of W201 at syn2 approximates 100% purple with a traceof variegated and white. The fall dormancy of W201 is similar to Legend (Class4).
4. W201 has high resistance to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Verticilliumwilt, Phytophthora rootrot, Aphanomyces root rot (race 1) and pea aphid, and resistance to anthracnose (race 1).Reaction to blue alfalfa aphid, spottedalfalfa aphid, stem nematode and root knot nematode hasnot been adequatelytested.
5. Breeder seed (syn1) was produced in 1994 on 96 plants under cage isolationat Warden,Washington. Sufficient foundation (syn2) seed will be producedfor the expected life of thevariety and will be maintained by W-L Research. One generation of breeder (syn1), twogenerations of foundation (syn2 or 3)and three generations of certified (syn2, 3 or 4) seed arerecognized. Themaximum permitted length of stand for foundation and certified seed fieldsarethree and five years, respectively. Foundation seed must be produced above40 degrees Northlatitude. Production of syn3 foundation seed requires consentof the breeder.
6. Certified seed will be marketed in 2000.
7. It is undecided whether application will be made for Plant VarietyProtection.
