NEMIESIS

1. Nemesis is a synthetic variety with 157 parent plants which were selectedsequentially formultifoliolate leaf expression and for resistance to Phytophthoraroot rot and Aphanomyces rootrot (race 1). Parent plants were selected fromcrosses between selections from three year oldWisconsin nurseries that werederived from various populations which were developed byphenotypic recurrentselection for high relative feed value (using Near Infrared ReflectanceSpectroscopy),and for resistance to one or more of the following pests: bacterial wilt, verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, Aphanomyces root rot (race 1),anthracnose (race 1),and Leptosphaerulina. leafspot. Parentage of Nemesistraces to the following germplasmsources: Ultraleaf87, Tartan, GH 787, MultiQueen, and miscellaneous Cal/West Seeds breedingpopulations. Approximate germplasm.source contributions are as follows: M. falcata (8%),Ladak (6%), M. varia(25%), Turkistan (4%), Flemish (47%), and Chilean (10%).

2. Nemesis is adapted to the north central areas of the U.S. and is intendedfor use in the northcentral and east central areas of the U.S ~ Nemesis hasbeen tested in Wisconsin, Minnesota, andIowa.

3. Nemesis is a moderately dormant variety with fall dormancy similarto Ranger. Flower colorobserved in the syn2 generation is greater than 85%purple and 13% variegated, and 2% yellow, with a trace of white and cream.

4. Nemesis has high resistance to anthracnose (race 1), bacterial wilt,Fusarium. wiltVerticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, Aphanomyces rootrot (race 1), and pea aphid, withresistance to stem nematode and spottedalfalfa aphid. Reaction to blue alfalfa aphid and rootknot nematode has notbeen adequately tested.

5. Seed increase of Nemesis is on a limited generation basis with onegeneration of breeder andtwo generations of the foundation and certifiedseed classes. Breeder (syn1), foundation (syn 2or 3), and certified (syn.3or 4) classes will be recognized. Production of syn3 foundation seedrequiresconsent of the breeder. Breeder seed was produced under cage isolation atWoodland,California, in 1993. Sufficient foundation seed for the projectedlife of the variety will bemaintained by Cal/West Seeds. Stands of foundationand certified seed fields are limited to threeand six years, respectively.

6. Certified seed of Nemesis will be available in 1998.

7. No decision has been made regarding Plant Variety Protection.
