MOUNTAINEER

1. Mountaineer is a synthetic variety with 100 parent plants. Plants wereselected formultifoliolate expression and resistance to one or more of thefollowing pests: stem nematode,Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora root rot.Germplasm sources used in developing Mountaineerwere LegenDairy (25%), MultiKing1 (25%), Excalibur II (12.5%), Prism H (12.5%), Dividend(12.5%), and Acheiva(12.5%). Breeder seed (syn1) was produced near Nampa, Idaho, in 1994.Seedwas harvested in total on all parents and bulked to form breeder seed. Approximategermplasm source contributions are: M. faicata (3%), Ladak (6%),M. varia (27%), Turkistan(3%), Flemish (57%) and Chilean (4%).

2. This variety is adapted to the winter hardy intermountain United States.This variety has beentested in Idaho and Oregon. It will be used in the,winter hardy Intermountain United States.

3. This variety has fall dormancy similar to FD4 checks and wintersurvival similar to WS3checks. Flower color (syn.2) is 89%.purple, 9% variegatedand 2% white, with a trace of yellowand cream.. Mountaineer has high multifoliolateleaf expression.

4. This variety has high resistance to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt,anthracnose (race 1),Phytophthora root rot, stem nematode and spotted alfalfaaphid, resistance to Verticillium wilt,pea aphid and northern root knot nematode.Reaction to blue alfalfa aphid and Aphanomycesroot rot (race 1) has not beentested.

5. Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generationof breeder and twogenerations of foundation and certified seed classes. Breeder(syn1), foundation (syn2 or 3), andcertified (syn3 or 4) classes will berecognized. Production of syn3 foundation seed requiresconsent of the breeder.Breeder seed was produced near Nampa, Idaho, in 1994, Sufficientfoundationseed for the projected life of the variety will be maintained by Forage Genetics.Stands of foundation and certified seed fields are limited to three and fiveyears, respectively.

6. Certified seed will be marketed in 1998.
