WEBFOOT SUPREME

1. Webfoot Supreme is a 90-plant synthetic based on persistent and branch-rooted selections with 69 of the 90 on saturated soils in Michigan; 31 were on year-old Webfoot MPR, 20 of Dart, and 18 of Big 10 were on three-year-old stands. The fourth selection of 21 persistent plants with branching roots was on two-year-old stands of variety Webfoot near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Seed of the four genetic sources was produced from replanted roots of the four selections grown in field or greenhouse isolation with bee pollination. The seed was bulked with 50% Webfoot MPR, 18% Dart, 17% Big 10, and 15% of experimental Webfoot 'GH 89 Nema. Approximate germplasm source contributions are: M. falcata (20), Ladak (10%), M. varia (500/6), Turkistan (5%) and Flemish (15%).

2. Webfoot Supreme is adapted to the north central and east central U.S. regions and is intended for use in these regions. It has been tested in Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan.

3. Test variety is Webfoot Supreme. similar to the FD 4 moderately dormant Saranac check- Flower color is 78% purple and 22% variegated with traces of cream, white and yellow.

4. Webfoot Supreme has resistance to Fusarium wilt, anthracnose (race 1), bacterial wilt, Phythophthora root rot and Verticillium, wilt, and low resistance to Aphanomyces root rot (race 1). Reaction to pea aphid, blue alfalfa aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid, stem nematode, and root knot nematode has not been determined.

5. Seed increase is limited to one generation each of breeder (synl), foundation (syn2) and certified (syn3) seed classes. Certified seed may be produced from either breeder or foundation classes. A two, three and six year stand life is permitted on fields producing breeder, foundation and certified seed classes, respectively. Foundation seed productioq is limited to the Pacific Northwest- Breeder seed was produced in 1993. Cal West will sufficient seed stocks for the life of the variety.

6. Certified seed will be available in 2001.

7. Application will not be made for Plant Variety Protection.
