LaJolla

1. LaJolla is a synthetic alfalfa variety selected for northern root-knot nematode resistance. The germplasm of LaJolla consists of Condor, Syn. XX, Arroyo, Maricopa, Pierce, WL516, WL605 and Mecca. The percent of germplasm sources are: Indian (10), African (10), Arabian (20) and Unknown (60).

2. LaJolla is adapted and intended for use in the Southwestern Region of the United States. The state where it has been tested is California.

3. LaJolla is a non-dormant variety similar to Moapa 69 in fall dormancy. Flower color in the Syn. 2 generation is 90% purple, 10% variegated, trace amount of cream, white and yellow.

4. LaJolla has high resistance to Fusarium wilt, spotted alfalfa aphids northern root-knot nematode; resistance to Phytophthora root rot, pea aphid, blue alfalfa aphid: moderate resistance to bacterial wilt, stem nematode; low resistance to Verticillium wilt. Its reaction to anthracnose (Race 1) and Aphanomyces root rot (Race 1) have not been tested.

5. Breeder Seed was produced from bulking plants in cage isolation to produce Syn. 1 at Nampa, ID in 1990. Foundation Seed (Syn. 2 or 3) was produced from Breeder Seed or Foundation Seed. Certified Seed (Syn. 3 or 4) was produced from Foundation Seed. One generation of Breeder, two generations of Foundation and two generations of Certified Seed classes are recognized. A maximum of three years each are permitted on stands producing Breeder and Foundation and five years for Certified Seed. Sufficient Foundation Seed for the projected life of the variety will be maintained by MBS.

6. Certified Seed will be available fall of 1998.

7. Application for PVP is undecided.
