DK193

1. DK193 is a synthetic variety developed by selecting 275 plants for late summer growth from a broad based population derived from crosses involving plants selected from the cultivars Mecca, UC Cibola, Pierce and Sequel for resistance to Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose (race 1), spotted alfalfa aphid, and/or Verticillium wilt. Breeding methods used were phenotypic recurrent and mass selection. Contribution of the above cultivars to DK193 was as follows: Mecca (60%), UC Cibola (20%), Pierce (15%) and Sequel (5%). Original germplasm source contribution was approximately: M. falcata (1%), Ladak (1%), M. varia (3%), Turkistan (10%), Flemish (l%),Chilean (9%),Peruvian (1%), Indian (25%), African (35%) and unknown (14%). Seed was harvested from the 275 parent plants in bulk during 1992 and designated breeder seed (SYN1).

2. DK193 is adapted to and is intended for use in California. It has been tested in Caifornia and Idaho.

3. DK193 has fall dormancy similar to CUF 101 and flower color of the Syn 2 generation is approximately 106 % purple with less than 1% variegated, white, yellow or cream.

4. DK193 has high resistance to Fusarium wilt, pea aphid, blue alfalfa aphid, and Phytophthora root rot; resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid and Northern Root Knot-nematode; moderate resistance to anthracnose, stem nematode and Verticillium wilt and is susceptible to bacterial wilt.

5. Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generation each of breeder and certified generations. Two generations of foundation seed may be produced; however, the second generation of foundation production requires the consent of the breeder. Breeder (Syn 1), foundation (Syn 2 or Syn 3) and certified (Syn 3 or Syn 4) will be recognized. Sufficient breeder seed was produced under isolation near Nampa, Idaho during 1992 to last the anticipated life of the variety and is being maintained under controlled conditions by Forage Genetics. Stands of foundation and certified fields are limited to three and five years respectively.

6. Certified seed of DKl93 will be available in 1996.

7. No decision regarding Plant Variety Protection has been made.
