A-57 THE EMBERS SEED COMPANY
1. A-57 is a seven clone synthetic. Six clones originated with Vernal and one traces to Ranger. These clones were hand crossed to produce the F1 progenies which were tested in Brookings, South Dakota. Based on the F1 performance selections were made and the Syn 1 seed produced in isolation in 1969 and 1970. 2. Tested in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Kansas and North and South Dakota. Primarily for hay usage, the area of adaptation will be mainly in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. 3. Flower color is mostly purple with some yellow and white blossoms, generally uniform in regrowth, not as early fall dormant as Vernal and upright in growth habit. A-5 has resistance to bacterial wilt and leafhopper yellowing resistance similar to Vernal and Kanza. 4. A-57 shall be in the limited generation sequence with one generation each of Breeder, Foundation and Certified Classes. Foundation seed production is limited to areas north of the 37th parallel. 5. Certified seed will be first available in 1973-1974. 6. Not planned for certification under provisions of the Plant Variety Protection Act.
