Dr. Kehr, age 82 of Sun City West,
AZ, died on November 7, 2003. Before his retirement, he was an alfalfa breeder with USDA-ARS for over 35 years and was stationed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was born on July 1, 1921 in Blue Earth, Minnesota. After receiving a BS degree from the University of Minnesota, he served four years as a naval officer, primarily in the South Pacific. Following his military service, he received a M.S. degree from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He then served as head corn breeder for Del Monte before joining USDA-ARS at Lincoln, NE. At Lincoln, he conducted research on the breeding, genetics, and management of alfalfa. He developed improved cultivars of alfalfa which had a significant impact on American agriculture. He was the author or co-author of over 200 publications and was an advisor and mentor to graduate students from around the world. Bill Kehr was well known for his consulting, both domestically and internationally. Bill Kehr held membership in professional societies and was the recipient of many awards. He was a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Agronomy. He is listed in Who's Who in Science, the Midwest, America, the World, Who's Who in Technology Today, Leading Consultants in Technology, and American Men and Women in Science. Bill Kehr made major contributions to the NAAIC and CAIC and was named Honorary Member in 1990.
