1998 WESTERN ALFALFA IMPROVEMENT CONFERENCE

Held in Bozeman, MT with the NAAIC

Minutes

President John Kugler convened the business meeting at 7:00 a.m., August 5, 1998

John Kugler welcomed George Vandemark to the Western group and the alfalfa research community. George will be working on germplasm enhancement as well as other topics in Prosser.

Old Business

A The minutes of the 1997 WAIC business meeting in Davis, California were read by Secretary Mark Smith and approved by unanimous vote.

B Treasure Pete Reisen was not present. John Kugler gave the treasures report. The WAIC account has $3,508.

New Business

A David Hannaway discussed placement of Western yield trial results on the Web. Dennis Cash suggested all Western Universities use the same format as the CAIC. Dennis Cash and Dan Putnam were designated co-chairman to investigate this further and report their findings at the 1999 WAIC meetings. David Hannaway will work with Dan Skinner and the WAIC committees to develop and use a search format for data in the future. Thanks went out to Dave Evanís for his past work in gathering and publishing trials results the past few years.

B John Kugler appointed Dennis Cash to coordinate Western variety trial retrieval and dissemination with Dan Skinner. Dennis will also serve as the person pulling hard copies from the Web when hard copies are requested, or will make a reduced number of hard copies before the data is sent to the Web in 99. Larry Teuber suggested that funding be sent to Dan Skinner to offset his costs of this project. Money is to come from the reduced number of hard copies not printed.

C Future Site. Ron Delaney invited the WAIC to Powell, WY for a joint WAIC/WSCS meeting the week of the 27-30, 1999. Discussion centered on a separate session for alfalfa papers and a tour specific to alfalfa interests. Industry has increased seed production in Wyoming and a tour of this area was discussed.

D Fred Gray suggested the new NAAIC directory have an additional section added which would place people and company/University together alphabetically. Dan Skinner is looking into this now.

E Larry Teuber addressed the lack of supply of one lot of standard checks. Private industry volunteered to produce seed for checks that are needed. This will be coordinated by Austin Campbell. Larry Teuber also suggested that the Regional PI station instead of Austin Campbell disseminate seed. Larry and John will investigate this by discussing the proposal with Stephane Greene and Austin Campbell.

F John Kugler asked David Hannaway to discuss the Northwest forage center proposal being proposed by OSU. The proposed forage center would hopefully generate funding and support for research, awareness of the role forages play, and marketing opportunities.

G John Kugler adjourned the meeting at 9:00 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Smith
