Target
1. Target is a 24-clone synthetic variety developed by Dairyland Research Intl., Clinton, WI. Sources of these clones traced to Magnum (7), P1206452 (5), Glory (2), unknown source of winter hardy type (2), and derivatives of our experimental breeding lines (8). Parental clones were selected based on progeny tests for one or more of the following traits: forage yield; stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed yield; bacterial wilt resistance; Phytophthora root rot resistance; and anthracnose resistance. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Syn. 1 as breeder seed.
2. Target has been tested in Wisconsin. It will be marketed in Midwest states (WI, MI, MN, IA, IL, IN, etc.). The primary purpose will be for hay, green chop, and dehydration.
3. Flower color is approximately 29% light purple to dark purple,
70% variegated, and 1% light yellow and cream. Mid-summer growth is erect and fall growth, semi--erect.
4. Target has high resistance to bacterial wilt and Phytophthora root rot, moderate resistance to anthracnose, and low resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid. No information is available for Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphid.
5. Breeder seed will be produced on cuttings of the parental clones in a cage as Syn. 1 and used to produce Foundation seed. Certified seed will be produced either from Breeder or Foundation seed. One generation each of Breeder, Foundation, and Certified seed class will be recognized. A maximum of three harvesting years are permitted on stands producing Breeder and Foundation seed, and five years for Certified seed.
6. Certified seed will be produced in 1985.
7. Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection.
DS--305
1. DS-305 is a 176--clone synthetic variety developed by Dairyland Research Intl., Clinton, WI. Sources of these clones traced to Magnum1111 (42), Vernal (10), Ladak (6), Cayuga (6), Saranac (6), Iroquois (8), Cherokee (10), MSA--W4 (35), P1206452 (20), MNDI (8), MNB1 (7), unknown source of winter hardy type (4), and experimental synthetic lines (14). Parental clones were selected based on one or more of the following traits: forage yield; stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed yield; bacterial wilt resistance; anthracnose resistance; and Phytophthora root rot resistance. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Syn. 1 as Breeder seed.
2. DS--305 has been tested in Wisconsin. It will be marketed in Midwest states (WI, MI, MN, IA, IL, IN, etc.). The primary purpose will be for hay, greenchop and dehydration.
3. Flower color is approximately 7% dark purple, 91% variegated, and 2% cream or light yellow. Mid--summer growth is erect and fall is semi--erect.
4. DS-305 has resistance to bacterial wilt and Phytophthora root rot, moderate resistance to anthracnose and low resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid. No information is available for Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphid.
5. Breeder seed will be produced on cuttings of parental clones in a cage as Syn. 1, and used to produce Foundation seed. Certified seed will be produced either from Breeder or Foundation Seed. One generation each of Breeder, Foundation, and Certified seed class will be recognized. Salute
1. Salute is a 26--clone synthetic variety developed by Dairyland Research Intl., Clinton, WI. Sources of these clones traced to MNB1 (5) , PI206452 (4) , Glory (3) , Discovery (1) , MNP42 (1), unknown sources of California white flower (1), and winter hardy type (2), and derivatives of various experimental synthetic lines (9). Parental clones were selected based on one or more of the following traits: forage yield; stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed yield; anthracnose resistance; bacterial wilt resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Syn. 1 as breeder seed.

Parental clones traced to MND1 (2), PI206452 (2), PI253951 (3), MSB--C4 (3), Flandria (2), Vernal (5), Iroquois (9), Saranac (8), Cherokee (2), Scout (1), Socheville (1), Vertus (2), BIC--5WH--RH (3), Glory (1), and MNB1 (1). Parental clones were selected based on progeny test on one or more of the following traits: stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed and forage yield; bacterial wilt resistance; anthracnose resistance; and Phytophthora root rot resistance. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Syn. 1 as Breeder seed.
2. 624 has been tested in Wisconsin. It will be marketed in Midwest states (WI, MI, MN, IA, IL, IN, etc.). The primary purpose will be for hay, green chop, and dehydration.
3. Flower color is approximately 64% light purple to dark purple,
30% variegated purple, and 6% light yellow and cream. Midsummer growth is erect, and fall growth is semi--erect.
4. This variety has resistance to bacterial wilt, moderate resistance to anthracnose, Phytophthora root rot, and spotted alfalfa aphid. No information is available for Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphid.
5. Breeder seed will be produced from cuttings of parental clones in a cage as Syn. 1 and used to produce Foundation seed. Certified seed will be produced either from Breeder or Foundation seed. 1. 655 is a 68--clone synthetic variety developed by Dairyland Research Intl., Clinton, WI. Parental clones were selected from Magnum (12), Riley (16), and remaining clones from progenies of various experimental synthetics with their parental clones traced to Buffalo (2), Kanza (5), Cherokee (4), Culver (4), Cayuga (5), Flandria (8), MSA--W4 (2), Saranac (1), Team (2), Vernal (1), and P1206452 (6). Clones were selected based on progeny test on one or more of the following traits: anthracnose resistance; bacterial wilt resistance; Phytophthora root rot resistance; spotted alfalfa aphids resistance; stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed and forage yield. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Sny. 1 as Breeder seed.
2. 655 has been tested in Wisconsin. It will be marketed in states where Magnum, Kanza, and Riley are adapted (KS, NE, OK, IA, IN, IL, MO, etc.). The primary purpose will be for hay, green chop, and dehydration.
3. Flower color is approximately 95% light to dark purple, 4% variegated yellow, and 1% light yellow and cream. Mid--summer growth is erect, and fall growth is semi--erect.
4. 655 has resistance to bacterial wilt, spotted alfalfa aphid, moderate resistance to anthracnose, and low resistance to Phytophthora root rot. No information is available for Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphid.
5. Breeder seed will be produced on cuttings of parental clones in a cage as Syn. 1 and used to produce Foundation seed. Certified seed will be produced either from Breeder or Foundation seed. One generation each of Breeder, Foundation and Certified seed classes will be recognized. A maximum of three years are permitted on stands producing Breeder and Foundation seed, and five years on Certified seed.

629
1. 629 is a 13 clone synthetic variety; derived from 7 experimental cage combinations, D 111, WL 307, WL 311 and Saranac AR. All source material had been screened for resistance to anthracnose, bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora root rot and spotted alfalfa aphid. Parental clones were selected for fall growth, vigor and absence of foliar diseases. Parental germplasm was derived primarily from Vernal, Saranac, Saranac AR, Ranger and Vertus.
2. 629 is a winter hardy variety adapted for use in the midwestern and northeastern US for hay, haylage and dehydration purposes. It has been tested in the midwestern region and will be marketed in the midwestern, northeastern and Pacific Northwest regions.
3. Approximately 74% of the flowers are dark purple to purple,
20% variegated, 5% blue, with a trace of cream and yellow. Mid--summer growth is erect, with fall growth similar to that of Ranger.
4. 629 has resistance to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, stem nematode and pea aphid, and moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose and spotted alfalfa aphid.
5. Breeder seed (Syn. 1) was produced on the parent clones at Bakersfield, CA in 1977. Sufficient foundation seed was produced at Nampa, Idaho for the life of the variety. One generation each of breeder (Syn. 1), foundation (Syn. 2) and certified seed (Syn. 3) is recognized. A maximum of three harvest years are permitted for stand producing foundation seed, and five years for stands producing certified seed.
6. Certified seed will be marketed in 1985.
7. Application will not be made for Plant Variety Protection.
Elevation
1. Elevation is a 10 clone synthetic variety. Parental clones were selected on the basis of clonal, S1 , and polycross progeny tests for agronomic traits and multipest resistance in Idaho and Iowa and were derived from Peak (3), Epic (2), Blazer (1), Flemish population (1), hardy x Weevlchek selected clonal cross (1), Peak x Epic cross (1) and Beltsville 72 x Epic cross (1).
2. Elevation appears adapted for hay, green chop and other forage use in the north-central region of the USA. It has been tested in Iowa and Wisconsin.
3. Flower color is 77--83% purple, 17--23% variegated, and less than 1% yellow or white. A hardy, upright growing variety with late summer and fall regrowth greater than Vernal and similar to Ranger.
4. Elevation is resistant to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, stem nematode and pea aphids and moderately resistant to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, and spotted aphid.
5. Breeders (Syn. 1) seed produced in replicated clonal cuttings in a bee cage with sufficient seed on hand in cold storage for the life of the variety. Breeders seed and parental clones are maintained by Land O Lakes. Foundation (Syn. 2) fields planted with breeders seed in northern areas of adaptation are allowed three harvest years. Certified (Syn. 3) seed fields to be planted with breeders or foundation seed and limited to six harvest years. Only one generation of each class is recognized.
6. Certified seed will be available in the fall of 1984.
7. Plant Variety Protection is being considered.
Sparta
1. Sparta is an 18 clone synthetic variety. Parental clones were selected on the basis of extensive clonal and S1 progeny tests for agronomic traits and multipest resistance in Idaho and Iowa. Parental clones were selected from Peak (9), Epic (7), M. falcata x Epic intercross (1) and a hardy germplasm selection x Weevlchek selection (1).
2. Sparta appears adapted for hay, green chop and other forage uses and will be marketed in the northern region of the USA and Southern Canada where Verticillium may be a problem. It has been tested in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Idaho.
3. Flower color is 70--76% purple and 24--30% variegated, with a trace of yellow and white. A hardy variety with erect growth habit, and late summer and fall regrowth between Ranger and Saranac.
4. Sparta is resistant to bacterial wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphids, moderately resistant to Fusarium wilt and Phytophthora root rot, and susceptible to anthracnose. No information on spotted aphid.
5. Original (Syn. 1) seed produced on replicated clonal cuttings in a bee cage in Idaho. Breeders (Syn. 2) seed produced in cages planted with Syn. 1 seed. Breeders seed is maintained in cold storage by Land O Lakes. Foundation (Syn. 3) fields planted with breeders seed in northern areas of adaptation are allowed three harvest years. Certified (Syn. 4) seed fields to be planted with breeders or foundation seed and limited to six harvest years. Only one generation of each class is recognized.
6. Certified seed will be available in the fall of 1985.
7. Plant Variety Protection is being considered.
Milkmaker
1. Milkmaker was developed by hand crossing 150 selected plants from each of two improved, northern hardy and flemish germplasm sources in the greenhouse. Germplasm sources had been screened for Phytophthora root rot resistance or anthracnose resistance prior to crossing. A complementary strain cross method of breeding was employed.
2. It is intended that Milkmaker be used in the upper midwest and east central United States where it will be used for general forage use. The variety has been tested in: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, California, and Nevada.
3. Milkmaker is intermediate between Vernal and Saranac in fall dormancy. Flower color is approximately 48% purple, 50% variegated, and 2% cream.
4. Milkmaker is highly resistant to Fusarium wilt, resistant to bacterial wilt, pea aphid, and moderately resistant to Phytophthora root rot and anthracnose. It is susceptible to spotted alfalfa aphid, verticillium wilt, and has not been tested for stem nematode reaction.
5. Seed increases of Milkmaker shall be on a limited generation system, with one generation each of Breeders, Foundation, and Certified seed classes. Foundation fields shall be limited to a maximum of three harvest years. Certified seed shall be the first generation from either Breeders or Foundation.
6. Certified seed will first be offered for sale in 1985.
7. Plans are to apply for Plant Variety Protection. No certification option will be requested.
Husky
1. Husky was developed by hand crossing 150 selected plants from each of two improved, moderately hardy and flemish germplasm sources in the greenhouse. Germplasm sources had been screened for anthracnose resistance and Phytophthora root rot resistance prior to crossing. A complementary strain cross method of breeding was employed.
2. It is intended that Husky be used for general forage use in the upper midwest and west central United States, as well as portions of Nevada and northern California. The variety has been tested in: Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, Nevada and California.
3. Husky is intermediate between Vernal and Saranac in dormancy. Flower color is approximately 41% purple, 56% variegated, 2% yellow, 1% white.
4. Husky is resistant to: bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt and pea aphid, with moderate resistance to anthracnose and Phytophthora root rot. It is susceptible to spotted alfalfa aphid and Verticillium wilt. It has not been tested for stem nematode reaction.
5. Seed increases of Husky shall be on a limited generation basis, with one generation each of breeder, foundation, and certified seed classes. Foundation fields shall be limited to a maximum of three harvest years. Certified seed shall be the first generation from either breeder or foundation.
6. Certified seed will first be offered for sale in 1985.
7. Plans are to apply for Plant Variety Protection. No certification option will be requested.
Wrangler
1. Wrangler was developed by conducting two cycles of recurrent selection of Phytophthora root rot resistance at St. Paul, MN in the population N.S. 79. Approximately 100 plants were recombined at Lincoln, NE after each cycle of selection. The N.S. 79 population resulted from combining 112 plants selected for pest resistance and vigor in winterhardy germplasm from the Nebraska USDA and AES breeding program. The estimated genetic constitution of Wrangler is: 5% M. Falcata, 5% Ladak, 20% M. Varia, 65% Turkistan, and 5% Chilean.
2. The area of adaptation is the North Central states. The usage will be for short and long-term hay production and in rotationally grazed pastures. Forage yields were obtained in 8 North Central states, Colorado and Wyoming.
3. Wrangler is a winterhardy variety comparable to Vernal in fall dormancy. Flower colors are about 45% purple and 55% variegated.
4. Wrangler has high resistance to Phytophthora root rot, pea aphid, and spotted alfalfa aphid; resistance to bacterial wilt and Fusarium wilt; and low resistance to Verticillium wilt. Reaction to anthracnose and stem nematode are unknown.
5. Seed increase is limited to one generation each of breeder, foundation, and certified seed. Certified seed (Syn-3 or -4) may be grown only from breeder (Syn--2) or foundation (Syn--3) seed. The length of stand in years is breeder 2; foundation 3 (with a 4th year optional depending on breeder approval); and certified 6. Enough breeder seed for the anticipated life of the variety is in cold storage at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. Syn-1 seed is also in cold storage.
6. Certified seed will first be offered for sale after the 1984 seed harvest.
7. Application has been made for Plant Variety Protection.
5444
1. 5444 is a 12 clone synthetic primarily tracing through several experimental lines to Europe, 520, Atra 55, Atra 50, BVR2, falcata x Vernal, falcata x Culver, Dawson, Iroquois, and Scout. Selections were made from progenies derived from crosses among clones selected for performance and Verticillium wilt resistance with plants from the variety Europe. Resulting parental clones were further tested for pest resistance and forage yield based on progeny row tests at several locations.
2. 5444 is a moderately hardy cultivar adapted to the central and northern region of the United States for hay, haylage, greenchop and dehy. It is recommended that 5444 be planted where Verticillium wilt may be a problem. The states in which 5444 have been tested are: Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, and Washington.
3. Flower color of Syn. 1 generation is approximately 20% dark purple to moderately dark purple, 66% light purple to very light purple, 12% light purple to light blue variegated, 1% light yellow and 1% cream. Growth habit is erect in midsummer and semi--erect in the fall. Fall dormancy is similar to Saranac.
4. 5444 is highly resistant to Verticillium wilt, Fusarium wilt and spotted alfalfa aphid, moderate resistance to leaf hopper and bacterial wilt, and low resistance to Phytophthora. Resistance to stem nematode and pea aphid has not been adequately tested.
5. Breeders seed (Syn. 1) was produced in rooted cuttings of parental clones in "cage isolation" of sufficient quantity for life of variety. Certified seed may be produced from either breeder or foundation seed. One generation each of breeder, foundation and certified seed classes is recognized. A maximum of 3 harvest years is permitted on stands producing foundation seed with 5 harvest years maximum on stands producing certified seed. Foundation seed production is limited to the northern region of adaptation.
6. Seed will be marketed in the spring of 1985.
7. Application for Plant Variety Protection will be made, and the certification option will not be requested.
