SPREADOR 3

1. Spreador 3 is a sythetic variety with 44 parent plants. Parents were selected from a four year old Iowa nursery for vigor, winter survival and expression of the creeping rooted trait. Parental germplasm traces to the variety Spreador II that was selected for resistance to one or more of the following pests: bacterial wilt, Verticilliurn wilt, anthracnose and Phythopthora root rot. Recurrent phenotypic selection was used. Approximate germplasm source contributions are: Mfalcata-35%, Ladak-31%, M.varia-31%, Flemish-2%, and Chilean-l%.

2. This variety is adapted to western Canada and will be used in the northern U.S and western Canada. It has been tested in Alberta, Canada..

3. Spreador 3 is a very dormant variety with fall dormancy similar to Norseman. Flower color in the Syn 2 generation is 59% purple, 37% variegated, 4% yellow with a trace of white and cream.

4. Spreador 3 has high resistance to bacterial wilt and Fusariurn wilt, resistance to anthracnose (race I) and moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, pea aphid and stem nematode. This variety is susceptible to Aphanomyces root rot (race 1) and spotted alfalfa aphid. Reaction to root knot nematode and blue aphid have not been tested.

5. Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generation each of breeder, foundation and certified seed classes. Breeder (Syn 2), foundation (Syn 3), and certified (Syn 4) classes will be recognized. Breeder seed was produced at Othello, Washington in 1990. Sufficient foundation seed for the projected life of the vareity will be maintained by Nortlu-up King. Stands of foundation and certified seed fields are limited to 3 and 6 years, respectively.

6. Certified seed will be available in 1994.

7. Application for Plant Variety Protection is anticipated.

8. Information in the NAVRB application can be forwarded to the PVP office.
