Renegade

1.  Renegade is a synthetic variety with 115 parent plants. Parent plants trace to 3 varieties, with the primary selection criteria including one or more of the following: Vigor, color, seed set, and resistance to downy mildew and Phytophthora root rot. The following germplasm sources (with percentage contribution) were used in the development of Renegade: Wrangler (45%), DK-120 (45%) and Elevation (10%).  Estimates of original percentage germplasm include M. falcata 6%, Ladak 6%, M. varia 23%, Turkistan 32%, Flemish 16%, Chilean 5%, and Unknown 12%.

2.  Renegade is a dormant variety adapted to the northern region of the U.S. It is being tested in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, Illinois, and New York. It will be marketed primarily in these states.

3.  Approximately 50% of the flowers are purple and 50% variegated, with a trace of yellow or cream. Fall dormancy is similar to Ranger.

4.  It has resistance to bacterial wilt, Phytophthora root rot, the spotted alfalfa aphid and the pea aphid. It has moderate resistance to Fusarium wilt and has low resistance to Verticillium wilt. It is susceptible to anthracnose (Race 1) in the seedling stage.

5.  Sufficient breeder seed has been produced and is being maintained under controlled environmental conditions to last the life of the variety. One qeneration each of breeder (Syn 2), foundation (Syn 3) and certified (Syn 3 or Syn 4) is recognized. Up to 2 harvest years are permitted on stands producing foundation seed with 6 years allowed on certified production. Foundation seed production will be permitted in Nevada, Oregon, or Idaho. There are no restrictions on area of produced on area of production of certified seed.

6.  Certified seed will be marketed in the fall of 1990.

7.  No decision has been made concerning Plant Variety Protection.
