Prestige

1. Prestige is a synthetic variety developed by mass selecting old plants from 2 and 3 year old hay fields in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. The selections were potted and later rogued by 11% for agronomic characteristics resulting in 194 plants that were planted under cage in 1988 to produce breeder seed (syn 1). The plants trace to Mission 477 Brand, Madera, and WL 515.  The approximate percentage of germplasm sources contributing to this variety are: ~. fJsA~ <1, Ladak 1, J~. varia 8, Turkistan 23, Flemish 1, Chilean 17, Peruvian 1, Indian 23, African 14 and Unknown 12.

2. Prestige has been tested in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys of California. it is adapted to this and similar areas where it is intended for use.

3. The flowers of Prestige are predominately purple with abcut 1% variegated and a trace of white and cream in the syn 1 generation. Its fall dormancy is similar to Moapa 59.

4. Prestige has high resistance to Phytophthora root rot, Fusarium wilt, and spotted alfalfa aphid. It has resistance to pea aphid and moderate resistance to anthracnose (Race 1) and bacterial wilt. Its reaction to Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, blue alfalfa aphid, Aphanomyces root rot (Race 1) and root knot nematode has not been determined.

5. Seed of Prestige will be increased in the sequence of breeder, foundation, and certified. Breeder seed (syn 1) was produced under cage in 1988 near Woodland, California. Breeder seed will be used to produce the first generation foundation seed (syn 2). The breeder will have the option to increase foundation seed from syn 2 to syn 3. Certified seed (syn 3 or 4) will be produced from foundation seed. Sufficient foundation seed will be maintained by I. K. Seed Research, Inc. for the life of the variety. Stand limitation for breeder, foundation and certified seed production will be 1, 4 and 6 years respectively.

6. Certified seed will be offered for sale in 1994.

7. The need for application for Plant Variety Protection (PVP) has not been determined.
