MissionTNT(amended)

1. Mission TNT is a synthetic variety with 90 parent plants which were selected sequentially for multifoliolate leaf expression and for resistance to anthracnose and Phytophthora root rot. Parent plants were selected from crosses between four year old California yield trial selections and various populations that were developed by phenotypic recurrent selection for multifoliolate expression and for resistance to one or more of the following pests: anthracnose (race 1) Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, blue alfalfa aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid, and Stagnospora root and crown rot. The following germplasm sources were used in the development of mission TNT: VS-448, C/W 2820, Mecca, DK 189, Condor, UC 332, C/W 2815, C/W 2817, VS 446, Sundor, Army Express, DK 187, UC 176, UC 196, UC 222, UC 263, and UC 276. Approximate germplasm source contributions are as follows: M.varia (3%, Turkistan (13% ), Flemish (3%), Chilean (7%), Peruvian (4%), Indian (21%), African (44%), and Unknown (5%).

2. Mission TNT is adapted to the Southwest and Moderately Winterhardy Intermountain areas of the U.S. and is intended for use in the Southwest and Moderately Winterhardy Intermountain areas of the U.S. Mission TNT has been tested in California.

3. Mission TNT is a nondormant variety with fall dormancy similar to Moapa 69. Flower color observed in the Syn.2 generation is approximately 97% purple and 3% variegated. Mission TNT has multifoliolate expression.

4. Mission TNT has high resistance to Fusarium silt, Phytophthora root rot, pea aphid, blue alfalfa aphid, and spotted alfalfa aphid, resistance to anthracnose (race 1), stem nematode, and southern root knot nematode, and low resistance to Verticillium wilt and bacterial wilt. Reaction to Aphanomyces root rot (race 1) has not been adequately tested.

5. Seed increase of Mission TNT is on a limited generation basis with one generation of breeder and two generations of the foundation and certified seed classes. Breeder (Syn.l), foundation (Syn.2 or Syn.3), and certified (Syn.3 or Syn.4) classes will be recognized. Production of Syn.3 foundation seed requires consent of the breeder. Breeder seed was produced under cage isolation at Woodland, California in 1992. Sufficient foundation seed for the projected life of the variety will be maintained by Cal/West Seeds. Stands of foundation and certified seed fields are limited to 3 and 6 years, respectively.

6. Certified seed of Mission TNT will be available in 1995.

7. No decision has been made regarding Plant Variety Protection.
