Elevation

1.   Elevation is a 10 clone synthetic variety. Parental clones were selected on the basis of clonal, S1, and polycross progeny tests for agronomic traits and multipest resistance in Idaho and Iowa and were derived from Peak (3), Epic (2), Blazer (1), Flemish population (1), hardy x Weevlchek selected clonal cross (1), Peak x Epic cross (1) and Beltsville 72 x Epic cross (1).

2.   Elevation appears adapted for hay, green chop and other forage use in the north-central region of the USA. It has been tested in Iowa and Wisconsin.

3.   Flower color is 77-83% purple, 17-23% variegated, and less than 1% yellow or white. A hardy, upright growing variety with late summer and fall regrowth greater than Vernal and similar to Ranger.

4.   Elevation is resistant to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, stem nematode and pea aphids and moderately resistant to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, and spotted aphid.

5.   Breeders (Syn. 1) seed produced in replicated clonal cuttings in a bee cage with sufficient seed on hand in cold storage for the life of the variety. Breeders seed and parental clones are maintained by Land O' Lakes. Foundation (Syn. 2) fields planted with breeders seed in northern areas of adaptation are allowed three harvest years. Certified (Syn. 3) seed fields to be planted with breeders or foundation seed and limited to six harvest years. Only one generation of each class is recognized.

6.   Certified seed will be available in the fall of 1984.

7.   Plant Variety Protection is being considered.
