DS-305

1.  DS-305 is a 176-clone synthetic variety developed by Dairyland Research Intl., Clinton, WI. Sources of these clones traced to Magnum 1111 (42), Vernal (10), Ladak (6), Cayuga (6), Saranac (6), Iroquois (8), Cherokee (10), MSA-W4 (35), P1206452 (20), MNDI (8), MNB1 (7), unknown source of winter hardy type (4), and experimental synthetic lines (14). Parental clones were selected based on one or more of the following traits: forage yield; stand persistence; winter hardiness; seed yield; bacterial wilt resistance; anthracnose resistance; and Phytophthora root rot resistance. Parental clones were planted in a cage and interpollinated by bees to produce Syn. 1 as Breeder seed.

2.  DS-305 has been tested in Wisconsin. It will be marketed in Midwest states (WI, MI, MN, IA, IL, IN, etc.). The primary purpose will be for hay, greenchop and dehydration.

3.   Flower color is approximately 7% dark purple, 91% variegated, and 2% cream or light yellow. Mid-summer growth is erect and fall is semi-erect.

4.   DS-305 has resistance to bacterial wilt and Phytophthora root rot, moderate resistance to anthracnose and low resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid. No information is available for Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, stem nematode, and pea aphid.

5.   Breeder seed will be produced on cuttings of parental clones in a cage as Syn. 1, and used to produce Foundation seed. Certified seed will be produced either from Breeder or Foundation Seed. One generation each of Breeder, Foundation, and Certified seed class will be recognized. A maximum of three harvesting years each are permitted on stands producing Breeder and Foundation seed, and five years for Certified seed.

6.   Certified seed will be produced in 1986.

7.   Application will be made for Plant Variety Protection.
