86637

1.  86637 was developed using several cycles of phenotypic recurrent selection in germplasm resulting from a cross of Meteor and an NK experimental line which descended from the cross of [Mans Kabul x Gladiator] x [K577] x NCW21]. Traits selected for were resistance to anthracnose, blue alfalfa aphid, Phytophthora root rot, spotted alfalfa aphid and Verticillium wilt as well as vigor and survival in breeding nurseries. Two thousand randomly chosen plants were transplanted into an isolated field in 1986 for the purpose of producing breeder seed (Syn 1). Seed was harvested in bulk in late 1986 and designated breeder seed of 86637. Germplasm sources contributing to the ancestory of 86637 are Chilean 19%, Medicago varia 15%, Turkistan 10%, Flemish 3%, Ladak 2%, and unknown 50%.

2.  86637 has been tested in the states of California, Washington, Oklahoma and Minnesota for forage yield and/or persistence. It will be used for general forage production in parts of California and the Pacific Northwest in addition to the central region of the U.S.

3.  86637 is similar to DuPuits in fall growth. Flower color is mostly purple and approximately 10 percent variegated.

4.  86637 has high resistance to anthracnose, blue alfalfa aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid and pea aphid; resistance to bacterial wilt, Phytophthora root rot and stem nematode and moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt. It has not been tested for reaction to Fusarium wilt.

5.  Adequate breeder seed (Syn 1) was produced to last the life of the variety in 1986. Seed classes will be breeder (Syn 1), foundation (Syn 2 or 3) and certified (Syn 2, 3 or 4). Two generations of foundation seed may be produced at the discretion of Northrup King Co. Limitation on age of stand will be one, three and five years respectively for production of breeder, foundation and certified seed respectively.

6. Certified seed will be offered for sale in 1991.

7. Application for plant variety protection may be made but the certification option will not be requested.

8. Information in this application may be turned over to the PVP office.
