84634
1. Germplasm used in the development of 84634 was developed by selecting for forage yield, resistance to anthracnose, Phytophthora root rot and spotted alfalfa aphid within the cultivar Thor. Breeding methods utilized in its development included phenotypic recurrent selection, progeny testing under field conditions and line crossing. Major germplasm sources contributing to the ancestry of 84634 are as follows: Flemish (67%), Turkistan (23%), M. varia (5%), Ladak (2%), Chilean (2%), and M. falcata (1%). 2. 84634 has been tested in California, Washington, Minnesota, Arkansas and Pennsylvania for forage yield and persistence. It will be used for general forage production throughout the central part of the U.S. (latitude 33-42). 3. 84634 has fall growth most similar to DuPuits and flower color is purple with a trace of variegated. 4. 84634 has high resistance to anthracnose, bacterial wilt and spotted alfalfa aphid; resistance to Phytophthora root rot and moderate resistance to Fusarium wilt. It has not been adequately tested for reaction to Verticillium wilt, blue alfalfa aphid, pea aphid or stem nematode. 5. Adequate breeder seed (Syn 1) was produced to last the life of the variety in 1984. Seed classes will be breeder (Syn 1), foundation (Syn 2 or 3) and certified (Syn 2, 3 or 4). Two generations of foundation seed may be produced at the discretion of Northrup King Co. Limitation on age of stand will be one, three and five years respectively for production of breeder, foundation and certified seed. 6. Certified seed will be offered for sale in 1989. 7. Application for plant variety protection may be made but the certification option will not be requested. 8. Information in this application may be turned over to the PVP office.
